gallette des rois

I had been pining for some king cake when working on those Mardi Gras paintings, and as it turns out, yesterday was the Feast of the Epiphany. There happens to be a tasty french cake associated with this holiday (gallette des rois) that the southern King Cake I grew up with originated from. We happen to work close to an excellent french pastry shop and I scampered over to get one....we each had a slice...and I got the feve! (Baked in both the King Cake and the Gallette is a small baby or figurine...feve is french for 'bean', because they are very small).
(Further enlightenment via wikipedia).

Also there is an italian easter 'bread' that is similar but has whole dyed eggs baked into the dough, it's lovely.
