a sketch I've hammered out for the 'Missed Connections' promo piece I've been scheming:

also, some color spots from days of yore (well, the sketches were. I recently painted these). From the Buenos Aires series:

r.i.p. rolling stone :(

I am so bummed about the new rolling stone magazine format. I loved their big pages and cheap paper. The new version is just no fun to hold. Bottom line is how much money they make. Said the co-founder, Jann Wenner:
“All you’re getting from that large size is nostalgia.”

silkscreen madness

here's that crazy silkscreen project i referenced two posts ago. i'm just going to stay mysterious and not explain what is at work here.

sketches; paintings soon!

Here are some sketches from Fernanda's that never saw it to the final stage. I have decide to go back and paint these, since some of them look pretty good...

Not sure how marketable this one would be as a promo piece, but it looks fun. From the "You are what you eat" assignment. A bit too literal, but I dig the cowlady's eyelashes.

The first spot sketch for the Buenos Aires piece, just some of the buildings there.

The second spot sketch. It's Evita reading Borges. I know it's ridiculous but I think that is why it's good. Fernanda said it probably would be hard to see in print. Both of these spots look like alot of fun to paint.

The Buenos Aires sketch (1/4 pg I think) related to the Borges spot above. I am into chandeliers and most anything that lives on ceilings.

Not for Fernanda, a recent piece:

this is a painting of damien jurado I started around 4 this morning when I couldn't get back to sleep.

I won't be posting till the first, but expect to see the finals for these.

lost at e minor: victor kerlow

hey everybody: victor m kerlow is on lost at e minor.

The link didn't display the page for me at first, so if this happens to you, just click on the illustration category at the top right and scroll down a bit. The piece they feature is one of my favorites.

Also, I made some silkscreen mess this past soon. I know I haven't been putting my work up in awhile and this blog is turning into more of a newsstand for other illustrators, but please bear with me a bit longer.

Final assignments for Fernanda's. Design a travel poster and a beverage poster. False whiskey and Alabama. What else is there?

I really like them, though the 'night' text is sloppy. I feel like moving on to new paintings, i took too long with these.

Feelin' better...

Here are a few more things from the portfolio class...sorry for the wait!

The last assignment, "You Are What You Eat". I'm thinking of repainting this one, though I like the palette, the drawing I was unhappy with. She's a bit stiff:

My selected Buenos Aires sketch, the market:

The final painting, which I am so in love with!:

One of my favorite authors, Carson McCullers. I did this painting a month ago but it was buried in my sketch pile:

I have been sick lately--what a bummer. But am feeling much better after visiting the doctor.

There are some cool installations and openings my friends are involved with this upcoming week, I think November 15th. So save the date and I will update you sooooon!

magic gardens...

A photo of the Philadelphia Magic Gardens.
Also, if you search for "Philadelphia Magic Gardens" some nice stuff pops up.

What was magical about this place (aside from it just being visually awesome in general) was that it reminded me of all the stuff that was lying around after the hurricane.

I'm completely into all the weird stuff out there we build out of fiberglass and crap paint. Mini golf, kiddie rides, santa statues, carousels. I have a ton of photos from South of the Border that I am hoping to use in some personal work soon.

3rd Ward Illos

Some pieces that I've done for the portfolio class over the past two weeks. I'm currently working on more interesting stuff that is less illustrationy. Had an inspiring weekend in Philadelphia, where I visited the Gee's Bend and James Castle exhibitions at the art musueum, and wandered through the Magic Gardens in the rain. I want to start sewing again. I feel this new stuff, while I'm learning alot by making it, is pretty icky-looking.

First version, conceptual piece about cross-pollination:

Second Version:

Final version:

Cartoonier than I had hoped for, but am really pumped about the palette.

First try for a rather literal piece about teamwork:

Second try. Much better but looks kinda cheesy. Oh well:

Next time I'll post Buenos Aires. Those should be pretty cool.
Also, I'm in a group show on Thursday at Destination Art Space, I'll post more information soon!

sketch face

i haven't been painting anything exciting, but have been catching some good people to draw on the train. and here's a self portrait, because I haven't made one in nearly a year, and I used to make them all the time. I'm sure it bears some significance but I don't know what it could mean right now.

nice boys series

another piece, based on a sort of homage to the belief that men are capable of vulnerability. i'm focusing on the sweet fluffy stuff, rather than reality. i've had too much reality lately.

i think this is where i make a broad, sweeping generalization about men in general, but i'd rather not.
